Helicobacter pylori is a common type of bacteria that can colonize in the digestive tract and attack the stomach lining. It infects around 60 percent of the adult population, whereby most become infected at an early age.
Helicobacter pylori weaken the protective mucous coating of the stomach and the small intestine. It causes irritation as acid permeates the lining and so can lead to gastritis and ulcers in the stomach and intestine. However, these advancements are significantly less common than the infection itself. Some patients don’t develop these symptoms at all. The Helicobacter infection is usually diagnosed with a gastroscopy, whereby the tissue obtained is examined for the bacteria.
The severity of symptoms can vary greatly. Burning pain in the upper abdominal area, bloating and burping, and nausea could be signs of Helicobacter-associated gastritis, while discomfort and stomach complaints after eating, pain in the night, or acid reflux and heartburn could point to a stomach ulcer. | Since Helicobacter pylori adversely affect our intestinal flora, Limosilactobacillus reuteri Gastrus (L. reuteri DSM 17938 and L. reuteri ATCC PTA 6475) may help to reduce the antibiotic side effects of the treatment and increase the concentration of valuable bacteria of the gut flora. |
